What is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Spinal decompression therapy is a non-surgical method for patients suffering from herniated discs, sciatica, degenerative discs, or any other spine-related issues. The force applied on the spine helps pull the disc away from the irritated nerves, bringing them back to the original position and making room for healing and repair.

Spinal decompression therapy has been successfully used for about 20 years and nearly 86% of the patients have never suffered back pain or neck pain after the therapy. So, if you are suffering from herniated or bulging discs, Sciatica, Degenerative Disc Disease, Facet Syndrome, Spinal Stenosis or back and neck pain, you should consider reaching out to a chiropractor because spinal decompression might just be your savior.

What is Spinal Decompression Treatment?

Our spinal cord has gel-like cushions called spinal discs located between the bones that hold the spine together. Sometimes, owing to an injury or weakness in the body, the spinal discs may get ruptured or torn. As a result, the inner part of the disc is pushed outside towards the membrane in the spinal canal causing immense back pain. In medical terms, this is called a ruptured disc, also known as a bulging disc or herniated disc.

Spinal decompression is a chiropractic treatment where a mechanical force is applied on the spine, gently stretching it to help relieve the pain. This mechanical force creates a pull on the spine and applies pressure on the damaged discs to reposition them. The force also helps in promoting adequate supply of oxygen, water, and other nutrients to the corrected disc.

Spinal decompression therapy treats:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Worn spinal joints
  • Herniated/bulging discs
  • Disc protrusion
  • Annular tears (when one-third of the outer portion of the spinal discs (the annular ring) tears up, leading to extreme pain)

How does spinal decompression therapy work?

Spinal decompression treatment is completely painless and totally safe. While some people get relief in just a few sessions, others may need several sessions for complete relief based on their condition and intensity of pain.

In the spinal decompression therapy:

  • The force applied to the spine is extremely gentle and aids in spinal elongation
  • The pressure in the damaging discs drops at the place where the spinal elongation takes place, initiating supply of the fluid which comprises of oxygen and nutrients. This also helps bring the bulging disc away from the irritated nerves
  • A decompression bed is used along with an advanced machine by the chiropractor for this entire process

Spinal decompression treatment can also involve other kinds of therapies which might be performed before or after decompression therapy. These can include ultrasound, heat or cold therapy, soft tissue massage and electrical stimulation. All of these may be recommended by the chiropractor for optimal recovery.

However, this treatment is not advisable if you are pregnant, have a failed back surgery, implants, spinal tumor, fracture, bone cancer, or rheumatoid arthritis.

Benefits of spinal decompression therapy

Non-surgical treatment

Herniated disc surgery like other surgical treatments may have certain risks like infection, damage to the spinal nerves, bleeding, and even leakage of the spinal cord fluid. Also, through the surgical treatment the patients may get relieved from the pain for a while, there are chances that the symptoms might not improve completely and that the pain comes back in the future. In close to 5% cases, the disc may herniate again after the surgery bringing back the pain.

However, this is not the case with spinal decompression therapy. The treatment is so peaceful and comfortable that the patients often fall asleep during the procedure. Spinal decompression therapy primarily involves applying a mechanical force to the specific area of the spine which is suffering from pain. The patients are simply asked to lie on the decompression bed and then they just have to relax. The non-surgical way has proved effective also because the discs are cured forever and hence the pain never returns.

Eliminates the root cause of the pain

As compared to the other treatments for back pain or neck pain which rely on medicines and surgeries, spinal decompression therapy addresses the root cause of the pain. This therapy caters to the exact location of the pain, stimulates repair and helps relieve the pain which is the biggest reason why people are opting for chiropractic treatment.

If you or someone you know are suffering from persistent back or neck pain without any relief, then you should consult a chiropractic care centre to understand if spinal decompression is right for you.

Completely painless

The treatment is totally painless as the patients do not feel the force or the stretch of the spine at all. The biggest fear when one talks about treating body pain, mainly back pain is that the treatment could be painful or may involve consuming a handful of medicines. However, spinal decompression therapy is just the opposite. There is no pain either during the treatment or after the treatment.

No medication

One of the best features of spinal decompression therapy is that there are no drugs involved in the treatment. Medication often has significant side effects on patients and can even cause allergies you might not be aware of. Taking medicine can get even more complicated and dangerous if you are already taking some medication for different purposes.
